Biography

Wai-yin Li finished her postgraduate studies at the Royal Northern College of Music, studying with Lynne Dawson. Before that, she studied with Christian Immler at Royal Holloway, University of London, where she obtained her Masters degree in Performance Studies. She has performed in various cities including London, Prague, Basel and Tokyo, where she sang with the Asian Youth Choir (2002, 04).

Operatic roles include Second Lady (Dido and Aeneas) and Fenena (Nabucco); and excerpt performances of Ginevra (Handel: Ariodante,), Adina (Donizetti: L’elisir d’amore) and Ilia (Mozart: Idomeneo). She also took part in the RNCM productions of La Rondine, The Threepenny Opera and The Cunning Little Vixen. Oratorio repertoires include Christmas Oratorio (Bach), Nelson Mass, St. Nicholas Mass (Haydn), Exultate Jubilate, Coronation Mass, C minor Mass (Mozart), Stabat Mater, Petite Messe Solennelle (Rossini), Missa Brevis (Kodály) and Requiem (Karl Jenkins).

In July 2007, she was heard in Il Tempo del Postino, a group art show commissioned by Manchester International Festival, singing excerpts from Madama Butterfly. Li joined the same production in 2009, held by Art Basel in Switzerland.

Li also enjoys working with composers. She gave premiere performance of Hong-Kong born composer Wah-Hei Ng’s songs setting poems by Christina Rossetti. She was heard in Jan 09 with the Ensemble 10/10, conducted by Clark Rundell, performing Chinese composer Sisi Feng’s Tao Te Ching, which Li premiered in Manchester last year.
